Unemployed aged workers and re-training

It is apparent that the Government is moving towards seeking increased workplace participation by the 55 and older, unemployed.

This implies some tightening of current benefit conditions, and clearly, with the rapidly changing nature of work these days, some thoughtful re-training will be required.

I say thoughtful, as seniors, by the very nature of the ageing process, do learn differently from the young. Faster in some areas, slower in others, and via more hands on and group processes.
As such we will need a new national programme delivery that will be based both on emerging job type vacancies suitable for the 55+,  and our capacity to learn the required new skills, at the right pace.
Most people will welcome the opportunity for gainful employment, the sense of self worth that it brings,  and the increased income that follows.

Your ideas on such re-training would be most welcome and we will pass them on to the Department
concerned.

The main problem with over 50 employment is the actual employers, they see 50+ and as far as they are concerned we are decrepit, incapable of any sort of work or training.  The young HR and executives are the worst offenders. Over 50 and with only 2 careers spanning 36 years should stand for something but it doesn't.  There must be some way to make employers realise that they would be getting reliable, honest, trustworthy employees in for the long haul.

The employment agencies on the Web for over 50s do not seem to last too long and jobs are few are far between.
