 elder abuse

Elder Abuse is a complex and many faceted major problem in our society, and one  whose incidence is still being assessed. It is being belatedly tackled, and sadly, it seems that it may well rival the incidence of child abuse.

We had a lot to do with the establishment of the Elder Abuse Prevention Association, [EAPA] which is  now about to hold its 4th Annual three day seminar in Melbourne [1st to the 3rd of October]. Details of this informative  and excellent networking seminar [and its registration details], can be found by clicking here

I have very strong feelings on this having experienced it first hand.

It was  mainly financial abuse and threats were issued that if certain issues were not addressed.ie wanting to see the Will, wanting a new car purchased for them,  there would be no more shopping trips provided etc.

Unfortunately the person concerned was in full control of their faculties and I was loath to intervene further than inform the person concerned that I was going to inform the Elder Abuse Unit if they did not stop their antics.  The response was "go ahead".   The person on the end of this financial abuse was given an ultimatum as to what would happen after a certain date if certain  needs were not met.   Two days before that date this person died.  No one will ever convince me that the stress of all this pressure did not bring on the heart attack.

The perpetrator of this elder abuse was a qualified aged carer!!!
